Ferritins are produced in almost all living organisms, such as animals, higher plants, fungi and bacteria. Their function in nature is regulation of iron homeostasis by sorting excess iron in its core. It catalyzes the oxidation of iron from ferrous to ferric forms and can store approximately 4500 iron (Fe3+) irons. This function is used for accumulation of metal ions, including Fe, as well as Pt, Pd, Cu, Ag, Co, Gd, etc., in the central cavity of ferritin. They are composed of 24 subunits with a mass of approximately 450 kDa, including both heavy and light chains. Ferritin subunits selfassemble into spherical, cage-like nanoparticles. To summarize, it has adequate structural features, stability, and ability to absorb a number of minerals and metals as well as versatility for genetic and chemical modifications of both the interiors and exteriors; these features nominate ferritin as an adequate candidate widely used as carriers for drug delivery.
